Big idea 4

Food chain:A food chain is an organization of animals where they gain energy and nutrients by eating organisms on the level below them. The red panda eats the foliage, the wart hog eats the red panda, and the lion eats the wart hog. The difference in levels of the food chain is very large, the consumption of an organism below only yields 10% of their energy.

Introduced species:An introduced species is one that is not native to a particular area. The giraffes at the zoo are introduced because they are not native to the United States.

K-strategist: Humans are k-strategists because we live in a stable environment so we need to devote more energy to competing for resources and surviving. K-strategists live in stable environments and need to devote more energy to surviving and competing.

R-strategist:Mice are r-strategists because they do not live in a very stable environment, so they do not focus so much on surviving as reproducing. They devote a lot of their energy to reproducing with each other so they can survive through sheer number of offspring.

Population: Population is the total number of organisms in a habitat. The fish in this tank make up the population of this species of fish in petsmart.

Biomes: Biomes are the type of area in which animals live in. The biomes in the above four pictures are aquatic, grassland, tropical, and desert.
