Big idea 4

Food chain:A food chain is an organization of animals where they gain energy and nutrients by eating organisms on the level below them. The red panda eats the foliage, the wart hog eats the red panda, and the lion eats the wart hog. The difference in levels of the food chain is very large, the consumption of an organism below only yields 10% of their energy.

Introduced species:An introduced species is one that is not native to a particular area. The giraffes at the zoo are introduced because they are not native to the United States.

K-strategist: Humans are k-strategists because we live in a stable environment so we need to devote more energy to competing for resources and surviving. K-strategists live in stable environments and need to devote more energy to surviving and competing.

R-strategist:Mice are r-strategists because they do not live in a very stable environment, so they do not focus so much on surviving as reproducing. They devote a lot of their energy to reproducing with each other so they can survive through sheer number of offspring.

Population: Population is the total number of organisms in a habitat. The fish in this tank make up the population of this species of fish in petsmart.

Biomes: Biomes are the type of area in which animals live in. The biomes in the above four pictures are aquatic, grassland, tropical, and desert.

Big idea 3

Flock: A flock of birds is a large gathering of birds of the same species. This is a flock, sometimes also called a colony or stand, of flamingoes

Batesian mimicry: Batesian mimicry is when a harmless organism develops the signs of a dangerous predator in order to scare away predators.  A legless lizard is a lizard who may have lost its limbs or it could have not used them to the point where they have started to deteriorate. The lizard is mimicking a snake in the sense that it looks very similar to a snake.

Gametes: Gametes are used by both parents to produce a child. The female and male gametes of a kangaroo meet and form a baby kangaroo

Diploid: Diploid is the term used in relation to the number of chromosomes in a cell. Monkeys, and many other mammals, have a diploid number of chromosomes in their somatic cells.

Mitosis: Mitosis is the cell reproduction cycle that produces two identical cells, both with the same daughter chromosomes. When zebras are born they are very small, in order to become the size of an adult their cells must undergo mitosis many times.

Haploid: Haploid also refers to the number of chromosomes in a cell, haploid is half the number of diploid. Gametes of diploid cells are always haploid. The gametes this turtle uses to reproduce are haploid.

Meiosis: Meiosis is the process is when the chromosomes are randomly distributed to the gametes of the parent organism. This red panda undergoes meiosis to create gametes for reproduction.

Behavior: Behavior is the way an animal behaves to suit one or multiple purposes. The behavior this leopard is using is sleeping during the day so it can hunt during the night.

GMO's: Genetically modified organisms are organisms that have been genetically modified to be more beneficial to humans, whether it be disease resistance or some other factor that makes it more appealing to us. These oranges have been genetically modified to be resistant to bacteria.
